A homicide suspect wanted in South Dakota took his own life in Larimer County on Saturday morning following a multi-state pursuit.

The Larimer County Sheriff's Office was notified of an armed man traveling toward Colorado from Cheyenne, Wyoming, on Saturday morning, allegedly fleeing South Dakota police following a homicide and domestic violence case in the state.

Following a pursuit, the man shot and killed himself, according to a press release from the Larimer County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies responded to an interagency notification that a wanted homicide suspect had fled Wyoming police and was heading southbound on Interstate 25 around 2 a.m. Saturday morning in a truck.

The sheriff's office and Colorado State Patrol officers deployed spike strips near the Buckeye exit on I-25. The suspect allegedly shot at law enforcement and continued traveling south at "high speeds," the department said.

Deputies were able to stop the truck using a precision immobilization technique (PIT) maneuver near the exit to Wellington. The man stayed inside of the truck. Before deputies could reach the vehicle, the man shot and killed himself, according to the release.

Despite life saving measures enacted by the deputies, the man was pronounced deceased on the scene.

A handgun was recovered from the vehicle. No other injuries were reported in the chase and shooting. Southbound I-25 was closed at the Wellington exit for nearly five hours during investigations.

The identification of the suspect will be released by the Larimer County Coroner's Office at a later date, the department said.

“This was an extremely dangerous situation involving an armed suspect with a disturbing disregard for public safety,” said Larimer County Sheriff's Office Lt. Troy Badberg said in the release. “Dispatchers, investigators and peace officers across multiple states worked together quickly and did everything they could to prevent harm to innocent people.”
