Things To Do

This free campground east of Lake City is nestled in a beautiful canyon with a handful of tent-only sites along Cebolla Creek. It is a primitive campground with a vault toilet but no water or trash service and is first-come, first-served. Campsites are located under high cliffs and get little direct sunlight. Trails penetrate the Powderhorn Wilderness north of the campground and the La Garita Wilderness to the south, offering solitude in two of Colorado’s lesser-visited wilderness areas. ATV and dirt bike riders will find a great road and trail network to the east as Forest Service Road 788 leaves the wilderness areas and enters the green Cochetopa Hills.

Pro Tips:

  • The driveway down into the campground is very steep and impassable when snowy.
  • The campsites are in a steep canyon and get little direct sunlight, so dress in layers.
  • A great nearby trail is the Cannibal Plateau Trail, open to hikers, mountain bikes and off-highway-vehicle enthusiasts. It leads to a high mesa with great views of the San Juan Mountains and a sordid history: Colorado’s most famous cannibal, Alferd Packer, who got snowbound here in 1874 and murdered and ate his companions.
  • Recommended season(s): June – September.
