Things To Do

This small, rustic campground is located near Vallecito Reservoir in southwest Colorado, where the Pinos River spills out of the Weminuche Wilderness. There are six sites, available on a first-come, first-served basis, and no water or bathrooms. All the sites offer splendid views of the river valley. This is a great alternative to the more-crowded campgrounds around Vallecito Reservoir and also a convenient base camp for hikes into the Weminuche. Emerald Lake, Colorado’s third-largest natural lake, is a stunning destination, but it’s eight miles each way and more suitable as an overnight backpack trip than a day hike.

Pro Tips

  • If hiking the Pine River Trail, the first three miles pass through private property so stay on the trail.
  • The campsites are small and can only accommodate tents and small RVs or campers.
  • The Pine River Trail is very popular among horseback riders. Hikers should give them a wide berth on the trail.
  • Recommended season(s): Spring – fall.
