Things To Do

Crested Butte may get all the attention, but its neighbor to the south, Gunnison, is becoming known as a mountain-biking Mecca all its own; and Hartman Rocks Bike Park is a big reason why. The 8,000-acre Hartman Rocks Recreation Area is just outside of city limits and offers 40 miles of singletrack and 33 miles of road biking, all in a desert-like setting with amazing mountain views. You may share the trails with hikers, and some trails are open to horses and dirt bikes, but mountain biking is the main attraction here.

Pro Tips

  • All trails and roads south of Powerline Road at Hartman Rocks are closed from March 15 to May 15th for Gunnison sage grouse conservation.
  • Experienced riders should try the Hartman Rocks Trail, which makes a 7.7-mile loop around the perimeter, with several options to extend or shorten the ride.
  • The trail network can be confusing, with numerous inter-connecting trails of varying difficulty, so be sure to get a map and plan your route.
  • Recommended season(s): Spring to fall.
