Snow is falling in Colorado and it’s already starting to stick to the roads.
Mountain travelers headed toward Vail Pass on I-70 are urged to slow down and use caution, as Colorado braces for a multi-day snowstorm that could dump more than two feet of snow over parts of the state. Travel impacts are expected from Thursday into Sunday, with the heaviest snow amounts falling from late Saturday evening into Sunday.
Significant snow & blowing snow will produce difficult travel conditions in CO mountains tonight thru much of the weekend. Heavy storm total accumulations due to the long duration of this event, with several mountain areas forecast to get 2+ feet! Travel is discouraged. #COwx pic.twitter.com/nKWaZtFEF4 — NWS Boulder (@NWSBoulder) December 12, 2019
The snow started coming down hard and heavy on Thursday afternoon, especially at the Eisenhower-Johnson Tunnel along I-70.

Matt Kroschel of CBS Denver also tweeted out a report of heavy snow falling down along Ten Mile Canyon between Frisco and Copper Mountain on late Thursday afternoon.

While the powder days will be plentiful ( one resort might get 26 inches of snow) over the weekend, high winds and heavy snow could make travel difficult across the mountains. Blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility, creating potentially hazardous driving conditions.
The snow has arrived! Forecasts are calling for 1-2 FEET of snow through the weekend. Ski Patrol has been hard at work opening new terrain and this new snow will definitely help! Stay tuned for more updates. pic.twitter.com/OLaxQFUtg3 — Loveland Ski Area (@LovelandSkiArea) December 12, 2019
Chain and traction laws are already active for many mountain passes and roads around the state, including portions of I-70, US 6, US 24, and CO 91. For the latest road and travel conditions, please visit Cotrip.org.
