A report from Airports Council International has revealed that a certain airport in Colorado is the sixth-busiest airport in the world.

It's Denver International Airport – no surprise there, but perhaps what is surprising is the airport's spot as the sixth-busiest airport in the world in terms of 2023 passengers is actually a drop from its third-place rank in 2022. In 2021, it was the 16th-busiest.

Preliminary numbers show that 77,837,917 passengers traveled through DIA in 2023, which was a 12.3 percent increase compared to 2022 and a 12.8 percent increase from pre-pandemic 2019.

It's 6th-place ranking in 2023 puts DIA behind only Atlanta and Dallas-Fort Worth in terms of passenger count at American airports. While passengers at DIA were only about four million fewer than those of Dallas-Fort Worth, the Colorado airport was nearly 27 million behind Atlanta.

Of the top 10 airports, LAX and O'Hare were two other American facilities included on the list, 8th and 9th, respectively. The top ten airports make up nearly 10 percent of all global traffic.

Worldwide, the number of total passengers hasn't quite caught up to pre-pandemic levels – at 93.8 percent of the passenger number in 2019. That said, worldwide numbers did land 27.2 percent ahead of 2022, indicating a significant rebound continues.
