According to local news source Western Slope Now, a relatively new dam on the north end of Crystal Lake, near Ouray, has developed a crack since its 2012 construction.
If the dam were to fail, it is considered a 'high hazard' situation, threatening loss of life and property.
While lowering water levels in the dam may provide a temporary solution, a decision is yet to be made related to the long-term future of the dam.
Crystal Lake is a popular spot in the southwestern San Juan Mountains region of Colorado, located just off of the Million Dollar Highway and home to a well-known trail.
