Green Mountain trial maintenance 2024

The Front Range Trails Conservancy has volunteer spots available for trail maintenance at two Denver suburb trails west of the city, the agency announced Tuesday.

The agency is working with the City of Lakewood Parks on Green Mountain in Lakewood and Mt. Falcon in Morrison.

"Last April was riddled with cancellations, but we've had a pretty smooth start to the season this year," Brian Curtin with FRTC said. "Fourteen hardy folks joined us on that mega windstorm day April 6 to get started up the Turkey Trot Trail, and a mix of returning crew and first timers got us started up the Green Mountain Trail. We're back at Green Mountain this weekend if you're interested in joining up."

Work is to be done up the Green Mountain Trail from the main trailhead on Alameda Ave. at Florida St (Hayden Park parking lot), and we got a good chunk of work done on the first weekend.

"We'll be continuing uphill toward the radio tower on Saturday and then take it from there," Curtin said. "Jared is leading these ones and coordinating our work with Lakewood, bringing along some good experience from the west coast and a lot of hours with us last year."

Similar to work in 2023, the FRTC has the 1.7-mile Turkey Trot Trail to look after.

"We're starting with maintenance before getting back to our rock projects, and the April 6 crew got a good chunk of it done, thanks in part to a group of folks from the National Conference of State Legislatures, based in Denver," Curtin said.

Upcoming Projects run between 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.:

  • April 27 @ Green Mountain
  • May 4 @ Mt. Falcon (wait list)
  • May 11 @ Green Mountain
  • May 18 @ Mt. Falcon (wait list)
  • June 1 — National Trails Day
  • June 8 @ Mt. Falcon (wait list)
  • June 15 @ Mt. Falcon
  • June 22 @ Green Mountain
  • June 29 @ Green Mountain

The three dates of May 4 and 18, and June 8 at Mt. Falcon are full, however, Curtin is asking people to sign up for the wait list if interested.

"Those are full thanks to alumni groups from Georgetown University and Virginia Tech, and Westwood Professional Services, an engineering firm with offices in the Denver area," he said. "Allan is running the upcoming Turkey Trot dates, and thanks to the larger crews we'll have Mark and Jared joining in."

Curtin also said it's tough for one person to lead any more than 10-12 people, so having experienced folks on board helps the projects run smoothly, whether through formal leaders or repeat crew members.

"Our first Lakewood project had three repeat members on it, and we're hoping to see more of you back out there this year as well," Curtin said.
