Slow driving can be illegal in Colorado and it may cost you big

Slow drivers beware – traveling too slow in Colorado could result in a pricy ticket.

According to Colorado Revised Statute Title 42, "no person shall drive a motor vehicle on any highway at such a slow speed as to impede or block the normal and reasonable forward movement of traffic." Doing so is considered a Class A traffic infraction and may result in a fine of up to $100 plus a surcharge, as well as points added to a driver's license.

There are obvious exceptions to this rule, including when a reduced speed is necessary for safety or is in compliance with another law.

In many cases, there isn't a specific "minimum speed limit" unless posted, rather that violations are determined to occur if traffic flow is being impacted at the discretion of law enforcement.

Slow drivers can also use several tactics to avoid breaking this law. For instance, slow drivers are able to move to the right lane when available, allowing those moving at normal traffic speed to pass on the left. This can prevent the slow driver from impeding traffic flow. When multiple lanes aren't available, slow drivers are also allowed to pull off the road where lawful and safe in order to allow other drivers to pass before returning to their lane. Both of these tactics can be particularly important to utilize when on Colorado's many uphill mountain passes.

There's nothing wrong with driving slow, just make sure you're not impeding others on the road while doing so. It could save you a pricy ticket and will likely save those traveling behind you quite a bit of frustration.
