Things To Do

Tunnel Campground, located near the Laramie River and the West Branch Laramie River, is a popular 49-site campground in Roosevelt National Forest west of Fort Collins. The campground, at 8,600 feet in an open lodgepole pine forest, is open from June to October on a first-come first-served basis. Each site has a tent pad, picnic table, and fire grate. The campground has four vault toilets and water, although many campers prefer bringing their own drinking water. Parking spurs range from 25 to 70 feet long, accommodating a variety of RV and trailer sizes. Fires are allowed in grates unless restrictions are in place and dead and downed wood can be collected or purchased from the campground hosts. Popular activities here include relaxing, fishing in the Laramie River, and hiking. Keep an eye out for moose along the river.

Pro Tips

  • Tunnel Campground is seven miles north of Colorado Highway 14. To reach the area from Fort Collins and Interstate 25, drive ten miles northwest from Fort Collins on U.S. 287. Turn left or west on Colorado 14 and drive 50 miles up Poudre Canyon to County Road 103/Laramie River Road just before Chambers Lake Campground. Turn right or west on Road 103 and drive north on the dirt road for seven miles to the campground on the west side of the road. The road is usually closed from November to June, depending on snowpack.
  • The Rawah Wilderness Area is west of the campground. Access this rugged and beautiful area by hiking up West Branch Trail (#960) from the trailhead near Tunnel Campground. The trail ascends the gorgeous valley of the West Branch Laramie River to Carey and Island Lakes below the crest of the Rawah Range. Trail junctions along the way are Camp Lake Trail at two miles and the Rawah Trail at three miles.
  • Recommended season(s): Year-round.
