Things To Do

This campground is along the Rio Grande between the popular tourist destinations of Creede and South Fork in southern Colorado, right along Colorado Highway 149. It has a dozen sites, with a bathroom and drinking water, and camping is $18 per night. It’s a great base camp location for fishing or rafting the Rio Grande, though the highway noise can compete with the sounds of the river flowing. Or just spend your days lazing along the river, which flows through a scenic gorge surrounded by high cliffs.

Pro Tips

  • The campground opens in mid-May and stays open until the first big snowfall, which varies from year to year, making this a great late-season camping destination.
  • Sites are first-come, first-served, and often fill during the busy summer months. You’ll find more ample camping by going back to South Fork and heading west a few miles to the Beaver Creek Reservoir area.
  • Creede, which was the site of Colorado’s last great silver rush in the 1890s, is a fun place to visit, with shops, restaurants and a well-known theater group.
  • Recommended season(s): Spring – Fall.
