The Continental Reservoir is a large, higher altitude reservoir near Creede that stands at an elevation of 10,300 ft. Spruce and aspen groves surround this 150-acre body of water. This large irrigation impoundment is regularly stocked with trout that are available to catch, but note that the reservoir has a fluctuating water level. The Continental Reservoir is lightly trafficked but still has a few basic amenities, including a parking lot, a restroom, and a concrete boat ramp. Motorized boats are allowed on the reservoir as long as they travel wakeless. Often during warm summer months, you’ll see anglers paddling in canoes, duckies, or kayaks to toss their lines further out from shore. The Continental Reservoir is mainly host to fishermen, but birders also come to watch for waterfowl. Anglers can expect the fishing to be good for stocked rainbow, cutthroat and brook trout.

Pro Tips

  • Camping is not allowed, but if you want to camp close to the reservoir there are a handful of nearby campgrounds. Some of the closer ones include Silver Thread Campground, South Clear Creek Falls Campground, and North Clear Creek Campground.
  • Recommended flies for anglers at the reservoir include: Rio Grande king, green drake, stimulator, sofa pillow, pheasant tail, halfback, Bitch Creek nymph, girdlebug, gold ribbed hare’s ear, Campbell stonefly, elk hair caddis, adam’s and tude coachman.
  • Recommended season(s): This reservoir and the fishing is open year round, but the lake is usually frozen from December until May and the parking area is snowed in. Snowmobiles and ice fishermen are still able to use it during the winter.
