Things To Do

Belle of Colorado Campground is a great spot to pitch your tent lakeside high in the Rockies for a few days. Belle of Colorado lies on the eastern edge of Turquoise Lake at 9,900 feet, just 15 minutes west of Leadville. To reach the campground, take County Road 4 from Leadville, following signs to Turquoise Lake Recreation Area. Belle of Colorado is one of eight camp areas by the 780-acre lake. The 19-site campground, open from Memorial Day through Labor Day, offers tent sites only, including a few prized sites just above the shoreline. Each site features a tent pad, fire ring, and pedestal grill. The campground has vault toilets and drinking water. Firewood can be obtained from the host. All sites are first-come first-served; be advised that it can fill up quickly, particularly on weekends.

Pro Tips

  • Enjoy recreation on Turquoise Lake. Motor-powered and paddled craft alike are at home on the lake, which is well stocked with lake, brown, cutthroat, and rainbow trout.
  • Hike the beautiful Turquoise Lake Trail. This moderate 6.4-mile loop encircles the lake, offering dramatic views of the surrounding mountains. Trail guides are available from the campground host.
  • The area also offers great side trips. Explore the charm of historic Leadville or head west to cross the Continental Divide over breathtaking 12,095-foot Independence Pass, one of the highest paved roadways in the country.
  • Recommended season(s): Summer.
