According to a report by the Denver Post, two people were snowboarding near Telluride’s Last Dollar Hut on Tuesday, Feb. 20, when they were buried by a snowboarder-triggered avalanche. Fellow snowboarders quickly dug them out, but the incident wasn’t without injury. One boarder hurt their leg and required a flight out of the backcountry.
This comes at a time when big snowfall after a relatively dry season has increased avalanche risks in Colorado’s high country. With some Colorado areas receiving multiple feet of snow in a short period, there is an increased weight load on a weak, unstable snowpack. This can result in powerful slides.
If you plan on entering the backcountry to ski, snowboard, or otherwise, please use caution and only partake if you have the proper training. Avalanches are not something to mess around with.
