In case you haven't heard, "billions of trillions of singing, winged insects with big red eyes are about to emerge from more than a decade of sleep underground," to be present in simultaneously in 15 American states in a way that hasn't happened for 200 years. Should Coloradans be concerned?

The 'red-eyed winged insects' set to sing are cicadas. And according to Yvaine Ye and Nicholas Goda of CU Boulder, the 'one-in-200-years' event in which the emergence of two generations of periodical cicadas takes place won't impact those in the Centennial State.

The generations set to emerge are two of seven 'periodical cicada' species that exist, emerging from the ground every 13 to 17 years in North America to live above ground for a few weeks to mate and reproduce before dying. While the two generations are set to emerge in the US sometime between April and June depending on when the ground temperature gets warm enough, they'll only be present in the Midwest, on the East Coast, and in the South. And Colorado isn't home to any periodical cicadas, not just these two broods.

So, there you have it. Within a few days or weeks, the news cycle is sure to be abuzz about cicadas emerging in a way they haven't done since 1803, but Colorado will be left out of the hype.

Oh, and also, before you get too worried about cicadas demolishing crops, these are cicadas we're talking about, not locusts. Cicadas 'drink trees' and most trees will be fine, according to an article from Purdue University.
