On Sunday afternoon, a 36-year-old pilot was forced to make an emergency landing on a Colorado highway after experiencing mechanical issues.

At about 3:07 p.m., the small single-engine Mooney aircraft traveling from Cheyenne, Wyoming to Rocky Mountain Metropolitan in Broomfield landed on southbound lanes of Highway 287, just north of Niwot.

Only the pilot was onboard at the time and thanks to his successful decision-making and execution, he walked away from the scene uninjured. It's also worth noting that no one on the ground was injured during the incident.

Traffic on the route was briefly impacted, but the road was fully reopened after the plane was pushed out of highway lanes. The Federal Aviation Administration is continuing their investigation of the incident, working to determine what mechanical issues resulted in the need for the emergency landing.
