Although it's still snowing, you might already be dreaming of spring and summertime activities, including biking. However, trails might still be slushy and your bike might need some work before you head out. But with proper preparation, you'll certainly have a successful first ride of the season.

Here are some tips to prepare for the upcoming bike season.

1. Tune up your bike

It's likely been a while since the last time you rode it, so spend some time making sure your bike is in riding condition. Make sure the tires are properly inflated and confirm that their tread isn't worn out. Also, test the front and rear brakes to ensure they function properly.

2. Clean your bike

Your bike could probably benefit from some cleaning, especially if you rode it during the winter. REI recommends wiping down the frame with a washcloth, water, and mild dish soap. This will remove the dust and dirt that's accumulated on your bike.

3. Prepare your gear

According to REI, you should bring the basic gear required to fix a flat tire. This includes a spare tube, a pair of tire levers, an inflation device, and a multi-tool on every bike ride.

4. Do some training

Make sure your body is ready for bike season. There are plenty of ways to get exercise throughout the winter, including stationary bikes, indoor cycling classes, and much more.

5. Beware of hazards

The snow hasn't completely melted yet! Ride cautiously to avoid obstacles like rocks, ice, debris, etc. The roads and trails can still be slick, so bike carefully.

6. Be safe

Staying hydrated is always important when it comes to outdoor recreation, so bring a water bottle with you on longer rides. You should also always wear a helmet. And if you're biking near a road wear bright colors to increase visibility for drivers. While riding, look ahead so that you're aware of your surroundings. Watch out for gravel, ice, wildlife, and other debris.
