According to a report by Joel Gratz of OpenSnow.com, snow starting in Colorado’s high country on Friday could continue through October 14 in some spots, dumping powder around the state.

Snow on Friday is expected to drop around 3 inches of flakes of northern and central mountains in Colorado, with continuing chances of snow lingering. According to Gratz, most mountains are looking at six inches of snow (at the least), with double that predicted for many of the state’s southern peaks. While most of the snowfall is expected to occur above 10,000 feet. Those in nearby mountain towns should expect to see some snow on their streets, as well.

If you’re planning on heading toward the high-country this weekend to squeeze out a few more moments of typical summertime outdoor recreation, mind the forecast. Saturday is likely your best bet, with drier conditions predicted during this period. Note that this is subject to change.

In addition to OpenSnow, two great weather sources for high-altitude outdoor recreation include OpenSummit (operated by OpenSnow technology) and Mountain-Forecast.com.

While typical early-to-open ski resorts have been shy when it comes to announcing an official opening date, colder temps in the mountains are expected to aide in snowmaking. Generally, Arapahoe Basin and Loveland Ski Area will open up prior to November, but we’ll have to wait and see.
