Englewood police shoot driver who allegedly drove directly at officers; bystanders duck for cover as bullet whizzes by

The Englewood police on Monday shot a man who allegedly drove a car at officers as train passengers ducked for cover when a bullet whizzed by.   

People waiting at a light rail train station sought cover after a stray bullet from an officer's gun struck a part of the station.

The police officers were investigating a "suspicious incident" between a man and woman near 3325 S. Santa Fe Dr. around 11 a.m., department officials said in a news release.

A driver on the scene didn't cooperate with officers and then allegedly drove directly at them, according to the department, which said the officers needed to shoot at the vehicle in self-defense.

The driver, later identified as David Sonsalla, fled the scene onto southbound Santa Fe Drive, where police pursued him, the authorities said.

During the pursuit, Sonsalla drove on the wrong side of the road and crashed into two vehicles at Mineral Avenue, leaving two people hospitalized with minor injuries, the police said.

Sonsella was transported to the hospital with a gunshot wound and was released into custody after treatment, according to police.

One of the bullets from an officer's gun nearly hit people waiting for their train at the Englewood Regional Transportation District. The stray bullet was heard bouncing off a railing just a few feet from where passengers were standing. Frightened bystanders, who heard several previous gunshots, ducked at the sound of the bullet hitting the station.

Englewood police officials said the 18th Judicial District Critical Incidence Response team is investigating the incident.
