On Aug. 27, one of Denver Zoo's orangutans, Eirina, gave birth to a healthy newborn which is believed to be a female. Zoo staff call the healthy delivery a, "momentous occasion," for sumatran orangutan conservation. The species is listed as critically endangered by the International Union of Conservation of Nature (IUCN) due to habitat loss, illegal hunting and the exotic pet trade.
