Questions loom as popular Denver brewery announces surprise and sudden closure

A highly-rated brewery that's been operating in Denver since 2011 has announced a surprise closure on social media.

According to an April 15 post from Renegade Brewing Company, they'll be closing their doors on May 3. And it seems like the closure caught even those involved with the operations of the brewery off-guard.

"It is with no shortage of difficulty that we announce that Renegade Brewing Company with close its doors on May 3rd, 2024," reads a post from the brewery on social media. "The sudden closure comes as a surprise to us as we're sure it does to you, and the business is evaluating options to reopen at a later date."

Information about why the sudden closure is taking place is extremely limited. In an article published by the Denver Post, a managing partner of the brewery claimed it was due to a variety of seen and unforeseen circumstances, but left it at that.

As might be expected, there's been plenty of speculation about the closure online – from factors like expensive land and leasing costs in Denver to events that unfolded after a partial sale to an outside investor several years ago. Even still, there doesn't seem to be a definitive answer as to why one of the Mile High City's longest-standing brewpubs is set to shutter.

Fans of the brewery have since called the closure "heartbreaking" and "terrible news."

Regardless of the reason behind the closure, one thing is certain – Renegade Brewing Company, known for 'pushing the boundaries of what craft beer can be,' will be missed in the Denver craft beer scene.
