In breaking news that was released on the morning of February 5, it was announced that Colorado's Arapahoe Basin Ski Area is set to be sold after 27 years of ownership under Dream Unlimited Corporation.

Alterra Mountain Company, known for their popular 'Ikon Pass,' will purchase the popular slopesport destination, with the deal set to close later in 2024. The deal is subject to closing conditions, which include regulatory approvals.

According to a press release on the matter, COO of Arapahoe Basin Al Henceroth will continue his role at the ski area.

“Change is a rich part of our history at A-Basin. Through different ownerships and eras, we’ve always been able to keep the vibe alive at our mountain,” said Henceroth, “Since 2019, we’ve worked alongside Alterra as a destination on Ikon Pass and I am certain of their commitment to our history, culture, and attitude.”

It's also worth noting that there are no changes planned when it comes to operations or pass access for the 2023-2024 season at this time.

Limited days of skiing at Arapahoe Basin have been included on the Ikon Pass for several years, with other Colorado resorts that have Ikon Pass access including Aspen Snowmass, Steamboat Resort, Winter Park Resort, Copper Mountain, and Eldora Mountain Resort.

“Arapahoe Basin is considered legendary for a reason. From its unparalleled terrain to its commitment to sustainability, A-Basin has a team that has a passion and commitment for this unique place and its traditions, making it an ideal fit for the Alterra Mountain Company family,” said Jared Smith, President & CEO, Alterra Mountain Company. “A-Basin was a key addition to the Ikon Pass in 2019 and we have since then worked alongside their dedicated team and look forward to continuing our shared goals and values.”

Arapahoe Basin has long been a 'local's favorite' spot, known for their Pallavicini lift, the East Wall, and the recently added 'Beavers' terrain. Arapahoe Basin also has widespread appeal for opening early in the season and closing late, with the season sometimes stretching from October into July. Arapahoe Basin is also known for its festive spring skiing atmosphere and 'The Beach,' with rentable spots in the parking lot at the edge of the slopes perfect for cook-outs and congregation.

"At each destination, Alterra Mountain Company leaders are empowered to be decisive, creative, and bold in order to retain each mountain’s authentic character. Recognizing the innate value of the unique culture found at each of the mountain communities, Alterra Mountain Company’s goal is to preserve, sustain and support its two most important resources: the mountains and the people who live and play in them," read the press release from Alterra Mountain Company related to the planned aquisition.
