In case you haven’t heard, there’s a movie in theaters right now called BlacKkKlansman and it’s all about late-1970s Colorado Springs. Released across the US in August 2018, this movie is based on the true story of Ron Stallworth, the first African American police officer on the Colorado Springs police force, best known for infiltrating the Ku Klux Klan while undercover ( see him talk on Sept. 20).

Though controversial to some ( spoilers), this movie has been received well over-all, scoring a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes with current talk placing the film near the front of the pack for the 2019 Oscar for best film. Starring familiar faces of John David Washington (Denzels’ son), Adam Driver, and Topher Grace (That 70s Show), the film is action-packed from start to finish, dealing with topics like discrimination.

From visionary filmmaker Spike Lee comes the incredible true story of an American hero. It’s the early 1970s, and Ron Stallworth (John David Washington) is the first African-American detective to serve in the Colorado Springs Police Department. Determined to make a name for himself, Stallworth bravely sets out on a dangerous mission: infiltrate and expose the Ku Klux Klan. The young detective soon recruits a more seasoned colleague, Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver), into the undercover investigation of a lifetime. Together, they team up to take down the extremist hate group as the organization aims to sanitize its violent rhetoric to appeal to the mainstream. Produced by the team behind the Academy-Award® winning Get Out.

Without giving too much away about the movie itself, here’s a quick recap of what to watch out for if you’re on the hunt for everything Colorado Springs.

While the movie itself wasn’t filmed in Colorado Springs, there are cut-scenes that set the scene of a beautiful backdrop. Garden of the Gods is seen, as well as what looks like the view of the Pikes Peak foothills from the summit of Mount Cutler.

A few local businesses and organizations also get a shout out, including NORAD, Fort Carson, Colorado College, the CSPD (obviously), and The Gazette. Nevada Avenue is also mentioned.

An interesting look into a past era of Colorado Springs that’s sure to keep you at the edge of your seat, BlacKkKlansman will likely be one of the most talked about movies of the year.
