According to the National Park Service (NPS), the Colorado National Monument "preserves one of the grand landscapes of the American West."

The area consists of towering monoliths within a vast plateau and canyon panorama, and has history that dates back thousands of years. The monument also has over 40 miles of maintained hiking trails to explore. These trails range from short and easy to long and strenuous, so it's simple to find the perfect hike. Hikers should make sure they've got plenty of water, as these trails can get very hot during summer months.

In addition to hiking, there are opportunities for camping, biking, and rock climbing. You also might see some wildlife, including bighorn sheep and collared lizards.

Rim Rock Drive is a scenic road in the monument, and is a great way to explore the area. The 23-mile drive follows the upper rim of a series of red rock canyons, taking 45 minutes to one hour without stops. Those traveling the route will be treated to views of the canyons, crisp blue skies, and juniper. There are several overlooks to stop and take it all in. The drive also provides access to Saddlehorn Visitor Center and campground, 19 signed viewpoints, and 14 hiking trails. The road is open to motorists and bicyclists.

According to the NPS, along the drive you'll see rock layers as old as 1.7 billion year-old pre-Cambrian gneiss, schist, and granites at the bottom of the canyons. There are also much younger sandstones and shales at the top of the road.

Colorado National Monument is a summer destination that offers great opportunities for outdoor recreation and a way to explore Colorado's ancient history.
