A Denver pedestrian died after being struck by a train on Friday evening.
The Denver Police Department responded to a crash report at the train line near Quebec Street and Smith Road around 11:45 p.m. Friday night, the department said. The train tracks are less than half a mile south of the homeless shelter at the former Doubletree hotel at 4040 Quebec Street.
Upon arrival, police found that a pedestrian had been hit by the train and died from their injuries, the department said.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the pedestrian crossed over the tracks against the crossing signal lights. Investigations are still ongoing.
Police did not identify the victim in the incident.
Colorado saw a record-breaking number of 136 pedestrian crash deaths in 2023, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.
The year 2022 saw the state's previous highest number on record, with 115 deaths. This number represented 15% of the state's total traffic fatalities.
2024 has already begun with multiple pedestrian fatalities throughout the Denver metro.
