On April 25 at about 4 p.m., North Metro Fire Rescue District responded to a structure fire in Broomfield, with suspicion that the fire was started by lightning that was present in the area. Family members were at home when the fire started, able to call 911 and also able to safely evacuate from the home with their dogs without injury.

Denver's 9News has since confirmed the strike, noting that two other Denver metro area homes were also struck about 30 minutes later – one in Evergreen and one in Erie. No injuries were reported.

Denver's RTD also suspended movement of some train lines as the storm blew through.

As spring gets underway, lightning storms will become more common in Colorado.

According to Progressive, the following tips can help reduce risks to a home when a lightning storm blows through:

1. Unplug appliances and other equipment from outlets

2. Invest in whole-home surge protection

3. Use point-of-use surge protectors

4. Ground your home or lightning
