Well-known tire and travel recommendation company Michelin has announced a new award system for American hotels – the 'Keys' – and eight Colorado spots were recognized.

The award system works in three tiers, and while 'three-key' hotels earn the highest honor, two-key and one-key hotels are also said to deliver big time when it comes to finding a great spot to stay. Hotels in only six states plus DC were eligible for the 'key' distinction, with decisions made after evaluation by Michelin experts, similar to how the Michelin stars are awarded to restaurants.

In total, 11 'Three Key' awards were given out nationwide signifying an 'extraordinary stay,' 33 'Two Key' awards were given out signifying an 'exceptional stay,' and 80 'One Key' awards were given out signifying a 'very special stay.'

Here's a breakdown of what spots got a 'One Key' nod in Colorado:

  • Aspen: Hotel Jerome, Auberge Resorts Collection
  • Aspen: The Little Nell
  • Aspen: Mollie Aspen
  • Denver: Clayton Hotel & Members Club
  • Denver: Four Seasons Denver
  • Denver: The Crawford Hotel
  • Vail: Four Seasons Vail
  • Vail: Sonnenalp Hotel
