The snow hasn't melted yet, but that doesn't mean you have to wait to start hiking. Colorado weather can change from snowing to sunny in a matter of hours, leaving trails muddy. However, the state has some great hikes for springtime, and they won't leave you slipping in mud and with wet socks.

Here are some of the best places to hike in Colorado during the spring.

1. Waterton Canyon

This hike is close to Denver and is at a fairly low elevation, so it's a great trek to start your hiking season. The hike is 12.6 miles round trip and is a "moderately challenging route" according to All Trails. The foliage blooms in the spring and you may even spot some bighorn sheep along the trail.

2. Castlewood Canyon State Park

This state park is at a lower elevation and receives tons of sun, making it a great destination for spring hiking. Castlewood Canyon has hiking trails that range from .5 to four miles and can be combined for longer trips. The East Canyon Trail is closed until May 1 due to the fragile nature of the area, so be sure to stay on designated trails.

3. Heil Valley Ranch

Heil Valley Ranch also offers a variety of hiking trails. Lichen Lope is a 1.3- mile, hikers-only trail. Other trails allow mountain bikers and horseback riders. Hikers will get great views of valleys, vistas, and forest meadows on these trails.

5. Garden of the Gods

This geological landmark offers 21 miles of hiking trails. The trails range from beginner to advanced and some are paved. Hikers will also be treated to views of the 300-foot red rock formations and the iconic Pikes Peak.

6. Alderfer/Three Sisters Park

Located near the heart of Evergreen, this park provides views of stunning vistas, landmark rock formations, ponderosa pine, and the most trails per acre of any foothills park. The west side of the park is closed until further notice (mid-2024).

7. Roxborough State Park

This state park also features stunning red rock geologic formations. Located in Littleton, the area also has distinct plant communities and a variety of wildlife, including black bears and deer. The South Rim Loop leads hikers through the red rocks and offers views of Denver and the foothills. The wild grasses and flowers emerge in the spring, making it a beautiful and colorful hike.
