A large avalanche has occurred on Colorado 91. This slide buried multiple cars. Individuals inside of those cars were able to escape after the slide without injury.

This highway is now closed in both directions and is expected to remain closed for “an extended period of time.” The slide covered vehicles on the road roughly a mile south of Copper Mountain.

Conditions in Colorado are extreme in a very wide range of areas. Avoid travel in at-risk zones and do not enter the backcountry. Here’s a look at how crazy this risk is right now. If you have to travel in areas where winter weather poses a hazard, this list is a good starting point of what should be in your trunk.

Avalanches have caused many problems around Colorado today, including closing a resort due to risk and a highway shutdown due to a gas leak.
