Section 16 is one of the best mountain bike descents around. The trail is a fun and fast technical trail that will leave you out of breath and grinning. The top portion is steep and loose with some tight switchbacks, but after the first few turns, the trail opens up and the grade mellows out. All 1.6 miles are rocky and technical, but many sections allow riders to let off the brakes and open it up. Section 16 is great for intermediate riders looking to push themselves or advanced/expert riders who want charge through rock gardens.

As a hiking trail, Section 16 is rocky with a few steep sections. This trail is mostly in woods and is great as a strenuous hour-long trail run loop if you run down the Palmer Trail.

Pro Tips

  • The bottom half of Section 16 is made of clay and becomes mucky when wet. Avoid this trail for a few days after a big storm.
  • This is a two-way trail. Open to hikers and bikers. Recommended downhill-only for biking.
  • Ride clockwise as a loop with the Palmer Trail, hike counterclockwise as a loop with the Palmer Trail.
  • Recommended season(s): April – October.
