Things To Do

In the gently rolling mountains west of Lake City is a paradise for anglers located in the Deer Lakes Campground. The campground contains 12 sites, available on a first-come, first-served basis, at $12 per night. There are hiking trails nearby, but the main reason people come here is for the fishing in a beautiful mountain valley full of aspens. There is drinking water available and two toilets. Campsites include pull-through sites for RVs and more secluded hike-to sites for tent campers.

Pro Tips:

  • Though usage is light, if the campground is full there are three more down Forest Service Road 788.
  • The views of the San Juan Mountains from Slumgullion Pass are stellar, so be sure to pull off the road at the overlook and take them in.
  • Deer Lakes are stocked and located just a few feet from the campground, making this a great family fishing location
  • Recommended season(s): May-September.
