The massive T-Rex located at the Royal Gorge Dinosaur Experience burst into flames on Thursday morning following a “rare” electrical issue. The imagery from the event is shocking, capturing this unfortunate blaze that left nothing but a skeleton of the replica behind.
Reaching a height of 20 feet, this replica was a key attraction of the Royal Gorge Dinosaur Experience. The Royal Gorge Dinosaur Experience is located near Royal Gorge, a large canyon just outside of Cañon City. It is a popular destination for tourists from the local area, including nearby Colorado Springs, as well as out-of-towners coming to see the highest bridge in the country (at Royal Gorge).
An official statement from the company was posted on their Facebook page as follows: “There was an unfortunate (and rare) electrical issue with our mighty T-Rex and he is no longer. You might even say… extinct. We are incredibly proud of our team for the way they efficiently and quickly handled this situation and kept our guests safe.”
They are continuing to operate with normal business hours, closing the area around the destroyed replica. Their Facebook post also mentioned that the big ropes course is closed.
While the pictures of this event are quite intense, it sounds like quick thinking by an effective staff prevented it from being worse, keeping everyone safe despite the large fire. The picture below shows what remains after the incident.
