In the shadows of several 14,000 foot mountains lies the highest town in North America – Alma, Colorado. Don’t think, however, that this extreme altitude means Alma is isolated. Many people pass through Alma on a regular basis down Highway 9 headed over Hoosier Pass and on their way to Breckenridge. On a recent OutThere Colorado film trip, we passed through and stopped for a few photographs.

One staple of Alma is Al-Mart, the local general store. Don’t confuse this with the megastore that’s got a similar name. Al-Mart is locally owned and operated. If you want a souvenir from your trip to Alma, a shirt or bumper sticker from here is the perfect gift.
Alma is also home to the highest saloon in America, the South Park Saloon. We’re told the pizza here is quite tasty.

There’s also a coffee shop which happens to be right by the road that leads to Kite Lake, one of the best hiking spots in the area. It’s the perfect stop before starting your early morning hike.
If you’re swinging through Alma, you might as well hit the 11,539-foot Hoosier Pass. It’s part of the Continental Divide.
You might as well say “hey” to the bison in the area as well. Check them out on your way home near Fairplay where Highway 24 hits Highway 9.
