Montana Knife Company recently posted a video to their Instagram page that appears to show a black bear chasing a mountain biker down a mountainside. The incident reportedly happened in Whitefish, Montana.

As the mountain biker weaves around turns, the bear crashes through off-trail terrain, seemingly in pursuit.

Some have noted that while the bear appears to be chasing the rider, the bear may also be running in fear, spooked by the person. This may be apparent in the way that the bear cuts corners instead of following directly behind the bike, as it would if pursuing prey.

According to Montana Knife Company, the biker was able to escape the scary situation uninjured.

While black bears tend to avoid people, they can become aggressive if threatened or if defending food or kin. It's also worth noting that bears tend to come out of hibernation in the spring, contributing to their hunger.

If you spot a black bear in the wild, slowly back away without turning around or running. Running and quick movements can trigger a chase response. Talk to the bear to let it know you're not the typical prey and if attacked, fight back.

Editor's Note: The 'fight back if attacked' recommendation varies by bear species, but with black bears, that's usually the best response if attacked. In the case of grizzlies, however, it's often recommended that one should play dead on their stomach, using their backpack and hands placed on the back of the neck for protection.
