A 5-year-old was involved in a wild encounter on Saturday, April 10, after a bobcat hopped into her backyard while chasing a rabbit. The young girl was seated on the back of a toy tricycle at the time, maintaining a stare with the predator for a full 22 seconds before the animal moved on.

Watch the wild video, accompanied with a report from Fox31, below:

While bobcats tend to avoid interactions with humans and are rarely seen during broad daylight (and in a neighborhood, for that matter), there can always exceptions. For this reason, it's important to keep a watchful eye on small children and pets. While attacks are rare, they can occur.

Generally speaking, if you spot a bobcat, you should scare it away with a loud noise. Not only does this help you avoid a potentially dangerous encounter, it also hazes the animal, making it less likely to approach humans in the future.

According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife, a widespread animal count of Colorado's bobcats hasn't been conducted due to cost and difficulties posed by the task. That being said, the population is thought to be stable. It is known that roughly 2,000 bobcats were killed by hunters in Colorado in 2018, often prized for their pelts.
