UPDATE: This article is about Cottonwood Pass Road near Glenwood Springs, not Cottonwood Pass that connects Buena Vista to Crested Butte.

Cottonwood Pass Road should not be used a detour for the I-70 Glenwood Canyon closure, according to the city of Glenwood Springs. This 24-mile closure on I-70 is currently in place due to a wildfire.

The timeline for reopening is unknown, but the closure is expected to be in place until Tuesday evening for a recovery mission.

Delays may occur and alternate routes are strongly recommended including routes US 24, US 285, and US 50.

Check CDOT’s Facebook, Twitter (@coloradodot) or cotrip.org for closures and delays on highways and roads across Colorado.

There are 2 different Cottonwood Passes. One goes from BV to Taylor Reservoir and then CB. One goes from Gypsum to Carbondale. The accident happened on the Cottonwood Pass from Gypsum to Carbondale. People often try to use that pass when Glenwood Canyon is closed, but it is not designed for heavy traffic, including semi trucks. The photo in this article is of the other Cottonwood Pass - that travels outside of Buena Vista.
