US 6 in Clear Creek Canyon is about to get a $5 million lighting makeover with tunnel upgrades taking place in two phases this spring and fall of 2021. The upgrade will result in periodic closures, forcing travelers to take alternate routes.

The project, kicking off phase one from April through June, will modernize lighting in tunnels 1-3, 5, and 6 along US 6 Clear Creek Canyon between the intersection of CO 93 and CO 58 to Interstate 70 near Idaho Springs. Overnight full closures will be necessary to complete this work, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT).

Officials say the new lighting in the tunnels will not only improve safety and visibility in Clear Creek Canyon, but they will also become more energy efficient.

Full closures are scheduled to take place on Sunday nights from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 am, and Monday through Thursday nights from 4:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. along US 6 between I-70 and CO 119.

Traffic impacts, including lane closures and overnight full closures throughout the duration of the various projects, can be expected into 2022. No major impacts will be planned on weekends or holidays, with plans in place to accommodate seasonal motorists.

Motorists traveling to Black Hawk or Central City during full closures will detour using US 6 Clear Creek Canyon at the intersection of CO 93 and CO 58 to connect with CO 119.

Editor's Note: Construction schedule is subject to changes based on weather and unforeseen circumstances. Check CDOT’s Facebook, Twitter (@coloradodot) or cotrip.org for closures and delays on highways and roads across Colorado.
