A woman was killed and 12 others were injured after multiple vehicles collided on Interstate 25 near Castle Pines early Monday morning, South Metro Fire Rescue said.

Emergency services responded to the crash just before 1 a.m. between Meadows Parkway and East Happy Canyon Road.

The Colorado State Patrol said the woman was driving southbound when she hit a deer.

The woman got out of the vehicle then was hit by another vehicle, throwing her into the northbound lanes of I-25 and killing her, the Colorado State Patrol told Denver Gazette news partner 9News.

Both directions of the interstate were closed because of the crash, the Colorado Department of Transportation said.

Very sad. Only lesson to learn- If you get out of your car to check on an accident, be very aware of traffic.
