Dick's Sporting Goods Park vaccination clinic

Over 600 people with appointments were turned away from the "Vaccines for All" event at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on Wednesday after a number of people had an adverse reaction to the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, according to a statement from Centura Health.

The vaccination clinic — sponsored by Centura Health and the state —closed around 3:30 p.m. after more than 1,700 shots were administered. Kevin Massey, a spokesperson for Centura Health, said 11 people had an adverse reaction in the on-site observation site, which required two patients to be transported to a hospital for additional observation

"Following the administration of the J&J vaccine and during onsite observation, we saw a limited number of adverse reactions to the vaccine," Centura Health officials said in the statement.

"We followed our protocols and in an abundance of caution, made the decision — in partnership with the state — to pause operations for the remainder of the day."

Centura officials did not specify what reactions were observed or their severity. Messages seeking further information from the state were not immediately returned.

A spokesman for the Tri-County Health Department, under whose jurisdiction the Dick's facility falls, said the agency was also just learning about the problem.

The 640 people who were scheduled to receive their vaccine Wednesday will automatically be rescheduled for another mass vaccination event on Sunday, where they’ll receive the Pfizer vaccine, Massey said.

That’s where the Colorado Rapids soccer team plays. It’s in Commerce City, just northeast of downtown Denver.
