Though a bald eagle’s diet typically consists of fish and other birds, the species is considered an opportunistic carnivore. Because of this, bald eagles are able to consume a wide variety of prey and are known to attack animals they would not typically consume. Tragedy recently struck in the Denver area-when a bald eagle turned its talons toward a family pet, a Westminster family claims.

According to a January 6 report from Denver 7, a bald eagle targeted and killed a 3-year-old Pomeranian in a lakeside backyard during an attack that left behind only blood, fur, feathers, and “several pieces of the dog.” The dog was outside with two other canines at the time of the attack in a fenced-in yard while the family was at dinner. Find additional details here.

Pomeranians are quite small, typically ranging from 4 to 8 pounds and reaching a height of around 8 inches. Bald eagles typically outweigh Pomeranians, ranging from 6.5 to 14 pounds with a wingspan of roughly 80 inches. The bald eagle’s talons tend to be 2 inches long, with the capability of exerting a force of 1,000 pounds of pressure per square inch. A bald eagle is generally capable of carrying around 4 pounds.

Bald eagles tend to nest by water sources, meaning that pets near lakes in Colorado could be at a greater risk of attack. It’s also worth mentioning that Colorado’s population of bald eagles is growing, with an estimated 400 statewide.

If you own a small dog, use caution while letting it outside. Keep an eye on the animal and ensure that the area the pet is in is well-lit, preferably enclosed. Don’t assume that being in a populated area will keep all wildlife away.
