The Denver Zoo announced its new sustainability goals this week, aiming to reduce the zoo’s energy usage, water usage and landfill waste in the coming years.
The zoo said its new goals will further its position as an environmental leader in the industry and community.
“This is not the moment to return to ‘business as usual’ with a system that doesn’t support thriving wildlife and biodiversity,” said Jennifer Hale, director of campus management and sustainability.
“Now more than ever, we are committed to transforming all aspects of our operations with a focus on sustainability.”
The sustainability goals focus on operational sustainability on the zoo’s 80-acre campus and throughout its supply chains.
The goals include reducing energy use by 25% by 2025, using 100% reusable energy by 2030, reducing potable water use by 50% by 2025 and becoming a zero waste campus by 2025, defined as having a 90% landfill diversion rate.
Hale said the new goals are designed to build on the zoo’s progress from the last 20 years.
Since then, the zoo has reduced water usage by 70%, kept 2 millions pounds of materials out of landfills and increased energy efficiency with LED lights and renewable energy.
