Campers have been cited for failing to extinguish a fire after it escaped and spread into the surrounding forest area at Eleven Mile State Park in Colorado last weekend.

Left unattended, the fire at a dispersed camping site spread to a nearby stump and grassy area before wildlife officials and park rangers were able to extinguish it.

The citation for failing to extinguish a campfire carries a fine of $50 to $750 and/or six months imprisonment. Whether or not the campers will be fined or jailed will be decided by a judge in an upcoming court summons.

"Luckily there was snow on the ground to keep the fire from spreading further," tweeted Colorado Parks and Wildlife. "Just because it is still winter does not mean you don't need to be diligent and extra cautious!"

Editor's Note: Keep fires small and campsites tidy. Be sure to always put fire completely out with water and dirt, both at night and when you leave camp.
