According to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, a dead woman and a wrecked vehicle were found in the area of Wolf Creek Pass in southwest Colorado.

A team of local and state law enforcement, along with search and rescue officials, were able to reach a Ford Focus that was found off the side of Wolf Creek Pass on Tuesday, February 23. The vehicle, a Ford Focus hatchback, was found "hundreds of feet" off the road in steep terrain and accessed from mile-marker 162 on State Highway 160.

A woman's body was also found 150 feet from where the wrecked vehicle was located. Details about why the woman was found so far away from the vehicle were not released.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Whether or not slick roads may have been a factor was not addressed in the initial report.

Details about the woman's identity will not be released until a positive identification is made and family members are notified. That information will come at a later date from the Mineral County Coroner's Office.

Wolf Creek Pass is a high-elevation road in Colorado reaching 10,857 feet above sea-level. Located in one of the snowiest parts of the state, this stretch of road is notorious for bad winter driving conditions, with a number of sharp turns and steep drop-offs found along the route. Both sides of the pass are notably steep, reaching a grade of 6.8 percent.
