Four Colorado Front Range shelters are now full of Siberian huskies after an overwhelmed breeder surrendered 50 purebreds earlier this week.

The huskies, surrendered on Tuesday, are being cared for among four local animal shelters including The Dumb Friends League, Humane Society of Boulder Valley, Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region, and Larimer Humane Society.

The huskies are in relatively good health, but are under socialized and will require some behavior support before they are ready to be placed up for adoption, according to The Dumb Friends League, who took in 13 of the 50 huskies.

The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak is looking after nine of the huskies, meanwhile the Pueblo region is caring for five.

"Our first priority is to earn their trust with kindness, comfort, and much-needed rest," stated the Humane Society of Boulder Valley, who also took in eight of the huskies.

To help support the care of these huskies, and other animals at these local shelters, please visit each individual shelter's website (tagged above).

While I am glad the dogs were surrendered safely, this is the kind of situation that the Humane Pet Act would have helped to prevent. But $$$ won out, puppy mills won out, pet stores won out, and large breeders won out with the help of the AKC and others who would surprise you. Once the restriction on rescues buying animals from mills was removed (I get not wanting to help mills out but it helps the animal more) it should have been a slam dunk. I speak from a non-partisan, animal loving position. As a small business owner I assert that there is no excuse for profiting from the pain of companion animals who cannot speak for themselves.
