While zombies might not be a clear and present danger, the concern of an apocalypse set off by these flesh-eating creatures is always something in the back of my mind around Halloween. Here's a list of a few great places to survive during a zombie apocalypse in Colorado. Please note that while these are all great suggestions, your survival is not guaranteed.

13. The Via Ferrata in Telluride
I don’t know how many zombie movies you’ve seen, but a majority of the undead don’t seem to be too coordinated. That makes the Via Ferrata a perfect place to wait out the apocalypse as long as you bring plenty of food to this cliffside perch. For a better night’s sleep, set up a portaledge hanging tent from one of the sturdy holds in the rock.

12. The Pikes Peak Summit
It's hard to think of a better place to hide than on top of a mountain. Sure, there's a road to the top of this one, but when was the last time you saw a driving zombie. It just makes it easier for you to get there. As an added bonus, there's a summit house for shelter, complete with a doughnut shop. You'll practically be surviving the apocalypse in luxury.

11. The Royal Gorge
While I can already imagine a scene in the next popular zombie movie that features the undead slowly crawling along the wires toward soon-to-be victims trapped in a gondola, I still think the Royal Gorge Complex would be a great place to hide. With two sides of a canyon, you could simply block the bridge and use the gondola to get to whatever side has the fewest zombies on a given day. Plus, you’ve got access to the ultimate escape plan – the Arkansas River. Simply inflate a raft and put it in the water when the area gets overrun and “poof”…you’re gone.

10. The Top of Colorado's Largest Free-Standing Waterfall
Not only would the stretching vista from the top of Bridal Veil Falls make for a great lookout, there's also a powerhouse built on top that would give you all of the protection from the elements you'd need. 9. America's Most Secure Prison
Found in Florence, Colorado, the SUPERMAX prison would be a great place to wait out the zombie apocalypse Walking Dead-style. Built with tons of thick walls, metal gates, and secure fences, this place was practically made to keep zombies out.

8. Devil’s Head Lookout Tower
While Devil’s Head Lookout was built to spot fires across the Front Range, it could also be used to spot zombies across the Front Range. Not only is there shelter at the top of a massive outcropping, there’s also only one way up and down from the perch – a staircase, which could easily be blocked or disassembled for additional protection.

7. A Rugged Mountain Hut
Many high altitude structures exist around the state, like this one on Hahn's Peak. These huts are hard enough for most humans to get to, let alone a bumbling zombie. If you can make it to one of these, you'll have a roof over your head and stunning panoramic views.

6. Bonanza, Colorado
Relatively isolated and home to only 16 residents according to the latest census data, Bonanza is the least populated official town in Colorado. Worst case scenario, you've got to fight off 16 zombies or just head to the many surrounding hills.

5. The Isolated Island Lake
Have you ever seen a zombie swim? I guess there was that one scene where they can float in Walking Dead, but that's just a television show. In real life, zombies probably won't be able to swim. Plus, if you're in the middle of Island Lake, you're also in the middle of the wilderness. Your chances of encountering more zombies than you can manage here is pretty slim.

4. The Shrine of the Sun
High above Colorado Springs, the Shrine of the Sun stretches 100 feet into the sky. It's also pretty hard to get to, found on a road that's typically blocked by the gates of Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. 3. The Cheyenne Mountain Military Complex
This place was built to withstand a nuclear blast...you can bet that it'll withstand a few zombies. Not only will you have the protection of multiple blast doors, it'd also be safe to assume that you've got plenty of weapons lying around. As an added bonus, this complex is designed to function after society falls, meaning you'll still have clean water and other necessities.

2. A Cliffside Palace
A massive 150-room structure literally built into the side of a cliff, this ancient home is perfect for the zombie apocalypse. Not only is it difficult to get to, isolated in one of the least populated parts of the state, it's also surrounded by lush forest, perfect for hunting. Photo Credit: Mesa Verde National Park.

1. A Freaking Castle
First, Bishop Castle is very isolated, along a well-built road, but in the middle of stretching forests. Second, the sturdy architecture of this building makes this location perfect for spotting zombies and fortifying yourself against them. And last, but not least, the dragon mounted on top of its roof breathes fire! I'm not kidding, Google it. Plus, can you imagine a final stand in this place with all of the towers and catwalks.
