7. Zapata Falls in Alamosa
Escape with the family to a hidden waterfall near the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve. Zapata Falls is at the end of a tame trail that follows a creek and is tucked between the walls of a tight canyon. After your hike, head to the sand dunes for more adventures like sand sledding, stargazing, and more. If you plan on visiting the nearby sand dunes, note that temperatures really start to heat up throughout the day, at times making walking barefoot on the sand unbearable.
Distance: 0.8 miles
Difficulty rating: moderate
When to go: best in spring, summer fall; open year-round.
Author’s Note: To reach the waterfall, hikers must walk through the cold water for approximately 75 yards. This might be difficult and dangerous for young explorers. It’s also worth noting that the road from Colorado Highway 150 to the trailhead is a 3-mile dirt road that is very bumpy.
