In the shadow of the mighty Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the famous Great Sand Dunes, this state park is a bird-watching haven with a scenic reservoir in the high desert of the San Luis Valley. There’s a modern campground with 51 sites and easy hiking and biking trails. The lake was only half full in the summer of 2016, but some years the level is high enough to support motorboats, jet skis, and sailboats.

Pro Tips

  • Nearby Great Sand Dunes National Park has a campground that is full nearly every day in summer. Plan on staying in this state park on your next visit to the Dunes to avoid the crowded campground.
  • Time your visit in late March or early April and you’re likely to see majestic sandhill cranes stopping here on their annual migration north along the Rockies.
  • Leave the bait and tackle at home. Fishing is not allowed in the park.

Recommended season(s): Summer to fall.
