The Colorado Springs Famous Dave’s on 8330 Razorback Road is one of 13 of the chain’s 130 locations to test four new menu items using Beyond Meat products.

Sylvia Matzke-Hill, culinary director for the barbecue eatery, developed recipes for barbecue street tacos ($5.99 per three), Fritos barbecue nachos ($7.99), a barbecue bowl ($8.99) and a tropical burger ($10.48).

All scored high for bold flavors, with the bowl getting our biggest vote. Details: 265-6227,

Beyond Meat is a Los Angeles based company that produced plant-based meat substitutes. They’re best known for their “Beyond Burger,” which uses beet juice to recreate the “bleeding” effect that’s experienced when biting into a real beef patty.

The meat substitutes included in Beyond Meat are mixtures of pea protein isolates, rice protein, mung bean protein, canola oil, and coconut oil, among other things. While often billed as a healthy alternative to beef, some consumers have raised questions.

The Center for Consumer Freedom even went as far to run full-page advertisements criticizing chemicals in “fake meat” products, with placements in The Wall Street Journal and New York Post. When Business Insider consulted nutritionists about the products, they came to the conclusion that the fake beef patties should be a “sometimes” item in the average diet.
