Human remains were found in the Mount Herman area Wednesday, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday.

The Coroner’s Office has not identified the remains, which were found near Balanced Road and Forest Service Road 322.

A Facebook page titled  Help Find Kevin Rudnicki said the remains belong to Kevin Rudnicki, who has been missing since September. Rudnicki, 20, was last seen hiking in the Mount Herman area Sept. 2, along Trail 715 in the Limbaugh Canyon area.

El Paso County Search and Rescue has combed through more than 25 square miles of the Mount Herman area in search of Rudnicki, said Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Jacqueline Kirby.

“Had we searched that specific spot previously, we would have found something,” she said.

Rudnicki’s family led an informal search party  Saturday.

In the days and weeks after Rudnicki’s disappearance, dozens of volunteers helped El Paso County Search and Rescue crews search the area on foot and using helicopters and drones.

Rudnicki was studying watershed management and planned to work for the U.S. Forest Service upon graduating from the University of Wyoming.
