The Timeline of the Breckenridge Troll, from Going Viral to Decapitation to a Second Life

Quick decisions made regarding the Breckenridge troll named Isak Heartstone have heads spinning around the internet. Here’s a timeline of events that are relevant regarding Thomas Dambo’s giant creation.

August 8, 2018 – Construction of Isak Heartstone is completed in preparation for the 2018 Breckenridge International Festival of Arts.

August 9, 2018 to August 19, 2018 – Breckenridge International Festival of Arts takes place.

October 2, 2018 – The Breckenridge troll starts to go viral online.

October 6, 2018 – The first Saturday following the viral event reveals a huge increase in trolls popularity.

October 12, 2018 – Just days after Isak’s boom in popularity, residents call for removal of troll due to increased crowds.

October 23, 2018 – The troll situation is discussed in a heated debate during a town hall meeting in Breckenridge, with one side loving the gentle giant and another side peeved about the increase in foot traffic in their neighborhood and parking problems. The official recommendation ending the debate is that the troll stays until the spring, and is then re-addressed. The vote was 5 to 2 in favor of the troll staying put.

November 13, 2018 – Complaints from local residents continue regarding the troll, sparking another vote. This time, the council votes 5 to 2 in favor of removing the troll.

November 14, 2018 – Artist Thomas Dambo makes a public plea to save his work of art.

November 15, 2018 – Hours after the decision to keep the troll was reversed, the troll is removed piece by piece.

November 15, 2018 – As the story about the troll’s removal hits the internet, criticism of Breckenridge and the town’s decision makers runs rampant.

November 16, 2018 – Artist Thomas Dambo announces that he is in talks with Breckenridge about relocating the troll to another spot in town instead of destroying it.

March 4, 2019 – Announcement made that Breckenridge troll is set to be rebuilt in Illinois Gulch near the ice rink.

May 2019 – The troll is rebuilt in a new location.
